Treatment of Primary Immunodeficiency
There are a limited but expanding number of therapeutic treatments and management strategies available to patients. These include antibiotic treatment, immunoglobulin replacement therapy, transplantation and gene therapy.
Immunoglobulin replacement therapy is often used for patients who do not have the ability to generate or maintain effective antibody responses. Treatment with replacement immunoglobulin can dramatically reduce their infection frequency and improve their quality of life.
The accurate measurement of specific antibodies is also important during the manufacture of such therapeutic immunoglobulin and hyperimmune products. Plasma donors are screened for the presence of specific antibodies and donor units with high levels are selected as raw material for the manufacture of therapeutic immunoglobulin products.
